Level up with markers not material

In JiuJitsu, the process of leveling up to a higher rank is commonly known as a promotion. In a belt promotion you can be awarded a new belt or a stripe on your current belt. In the moment, you are set on the material possession. You’re celebrating, “Yay I got the next belt” or “Yay I got another stripe”. Something happens when you put time and effort into earning a promotion. You become set on the material possession as a marker. You strive to be at a level that you are eligible for that material thing. You don’t celebrate because you are collecting pieces of tape, but that you’re acknowledged as being on a certain level.
