It’s OK if your goals change along the way

My previous post was focused on how I transitioned into something new, as a result of trying to reach my long-term goal. The take-away is that goals can change and be altered. Goals can divert entirely or just slightly, but each person is ultimately following a goal-setting direction that leads to personal growth. I realized this when I reflected at the skills I’ve gained over the years in school, in the workplace, and in training. I have become a better teacher because I am able to take a deep dive into the possibilities that can take place within a certain situation and truly listening to/understanding interactions that take place with others. One instance of a diversion in my own goals that I can think of is when I go in for training, I like to have an objective of what to work on. During open mat, I find that my objective may have to be altered based on who I work with. I may do more assisting with helping a training partner on why a move works/doesn’t work, when my initial intention was to work on a series that I’ve been practicing. The objective may have been altered at the time, but I was still training. My overall goal to better myself was still being reached while training and helping others. We’re going to find that we’re thrown a lot of curve balls on our path to success. It takes time and we have to learn that we can focus on ourselves, but we can always be diverted to assist in building others to their full potential. Roll with the punches on your own path and be patient enough to walk with others, even if it seems like it takes away from yourself. We’re all trying to do better. Let’s be better together.
