To paraphrase the blog posts thus far, we can use the EyeRoll4 model to examine why we do things and find out what’s really important to us. We can then use that drive to create a change/transformation or overcome challenges by setting a goal. The goal has to be clearly defined and we can achieve that goal by putting strategies in place to make the ultimate outcome more doable. One strategy for making goals more achievable is breaking them down into smaller short-term goals or using the SMART goal acronym as a tool. Simple, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely goals are equally as challenging to reach, but they give you more of a roadmap for success. To break down the categories, I’ll give you some examples that I’ve used. I’ve ended up training Brazilian JiuJitsu because I started out with a goal to walk better. For those of you who don’t know, I started using a walker when I was 23 years old and I hated it. I eventually learned to look outside of the box and found that walkers were not just for the stereotypical old man shaking his fist at kids to get off the grass. I had been falling a lot, so I knew I had to make a change. I went to physical therapy to get stronger and not fall as much (My EyeRoll4). I had a long-term goal to walk unassisted, which may not be accomplished for a while or may be modified to a different goal. I needed to break this up into smaller goals otherwise I was going to burn myself out with hope of something that may not be reached for a while. My physical therapy gave me exercises to perform at night to increase flexibility, strength, and motion. I would make it simple by setting a weekly goal to do exercises in my apartment 6 days a week. The number 6 is a way of measuring if the goal was reached or not. At the time, I had nothing else really going on at night, so I could definitely attain this goal and it was realistic. It was also a timely goal that would take me week by week and step by step towards improving my leg dexterity and ability to move. That is one example of how the SMART goal system can be used in a daily routine.
